The carrot and the stick – A combination of rewards and punishment to induce behavioral change
In my experience in order to succeed you have to want to do it and what you choose as ‘the carrot and the stick’ is personal motivation. I have a huge passion for fine food & wine and take allot of pleasure from it (recently too much pleasure) but I can be clever and use it to modify my behavior. For my personal challenge I have used a ‘carrot and stick’ incentive that will help me reach MY target!
The carrot is a vision, goal or reward gives drive and determination to succeed. The stick refers to an ever evolving ‘bottom line’ that wills or forces you do it, this can be a personal trainer to hold you accountable, meeting a training partner for sessions, competing against a nemesis or even posting what you will do on social media!
The stick – no wine until I am back in my ‘Ideal weight zone’, no matter how long it takes! (so the quicker I get there the better!)
The carrot – If I weigh less that 75kg by my birthday in June, (losing 8kg in 8 weeks) I can treat myself to a (reasonably priced) bottle of Penfolds Grange and share it at dinner with friends. An experience I will treasure!
I want to see change when I look in the mirror, but I do need confirmation of how I am going. So I have decided I will weigh myself twice before the official weigh in on my birthday as confirmation I am on track.
Whats Next? – to come up with the meticulous plan of attack of how I am going to do it… something to give me knowledge based confidence that I will do it.
Next post in a few days!
